Diatomaceous Earth for Bio Pest Control
1. About Diatomaceous Earth (DE)
Diatomaceous earth is a natural, abrasive powder that's the fossilized remains of ancient algal shells called Diatoms or Phytoplankton. The Diatoms living in the waterways absorb minerals and elements from water enabling them to ‘build' their tiny shells. Consequentially, the fossilized remains have captured and contain the some 15 trace minerals used to form the shell. As they die the microscopic diatoms drop to the bottom of the waterways and form deposits of essentially marine sediment. These sedimentary deposits are later mined, milled, dried and bagged creating Diatomaceous Earth.
Ours product is Food Grade Diatomaceous earth (DE). Food grade rating tells you it is safe to use. DE acts like a “chemical” by simply dehydrating insects and can be used externally like a chemical pesticide would be used. Organic farmers use it in their crops for bug control, as do people in their gardens. It won't harm birds, pets, and other animals as a chemical pesticide would.
2. How it works
Diatomaceous Earth mode of action for insect and parasite control is strictly mechanical. Diatomaceous Earth controls pests by cracking open their joints and by rubbing holes through their outer shells. The bugs die quickly, since the holes let air in and let out moisture from the insects' bodies, but it is safe to use around people and pets, with just a couple of simple precautions. You can use plain diatomaceous earth; you don't need to combine poisons with it. This makes Diatomaceous Earth an excellent and totally natural control, with no indicating of mechanical or chemical damage to the animal tissue.
Diatomaceous earth will continue working for months so long as it stays dry. You can leave a protective coat of DE to prevent future outbreaks of bedbugs, flea and other pests. You should apply regularly for best results.
3. Diatomaceous Earth (DE) Uses
A. Parasite Control
Diatomaceous earth is used effectively as a flea treatment. Sprinkle it along walls, in cracks, under furniture and wherever else a vacuum cleaner cannot reach. Wear a dust mask if performing a dry application. A safer way to apply it in the home is to mix one cup of diatomaceous earth in one gallon of water, put it in a spray bottle and spray everything with it. Shake it often to keep the diatomaceous earth suspended in the water. Diatomaceous earth lacerates the outer waxy skeleton of fleas and then dehydrates them.
B. Agricultural Pest Control
It can be widely applied in agriculture and used on any flowers, trees, vegetables and grass. It can help control various pests, like: Ants, Beetles, Bedbugs, Lice, Cockroaches, Crickets, Fleas, Mites, Spiders, Termites, White fly etc.
C. Odour Control
Diatomaceous earth is a natural product that reduces offensive smells. This is accomplished through the dehydrating properties of DE that absorb foul smells. It can be applied to cats, dogs or birds litter boxes and garbage can. DE will assist moisture absorption, odour control and reduce attraction by flies.
4. How to Use
A. Sprinkle a light layer of the powder over any indoor areas such as in and around beds, within bedding, kennels, baskets, household carpet, perches in and around the home where blood-sucking parasites may be present. Vacuum clean the house a few days after you apply the diatomaceous earth. Be cautious with the application, too much has been reported to clog up certain vacuum cleaners.
B. Apply diatomaceous earth to any other areas in your home that may be hiding pests, including crawl spaces, under porches, in the space between walls and in the attic.
C. For Pets, 1 tablespoon per day in ration for small cats, dogs and puppies, rub powder at full strength into the coat/fur for fleas and sprinkle on bedding.
D. Dust outside areas that hide pests, especially spots where your pet likes to rest, since such places can be havens for fleas or parasites.
E. As for odour control, sprinkle a light layer of the powder onto the cats, dogs or birds litter boxes while you are changing the litter sand.
For garbage can, after cleaning the garbage can and it is still wet, use your duster and apply diatomaceous earth on the inside of your garbage can. Make sure to dust the bottom and sides of the can to create a nice thin coating. Place the garbage can in a location where it can dry with the lid open. Once it dries, you should have a thin coating of diatomaceous earth on the inside of the garbage can. The coating of DE should dramatically extend the time between your garbage can cleaning days. As you notice the smells build again, simply repeat the process.
Using diatomaceous earth, it will keep your pets litter box and garbage smelling fresh and keep it free of houseflies.
5. TIPS
Apply regularly for best results. You should treat those hot spots with diatomaceous earth every 2 to 3 days to break the life cycle of the flea or other pests. Diatomaceous earth is not a quick fix. It will take time for the flea or other pests to come into contact with the diatomaceous earth and about 48 hours to dehydrate the flea or other pests it has come in contact with. The process may take up to three weeks, but it's a gentle, natural preventative to more flea or other pests outbreaks, and it's pet friendly.
Do NOT use pool filter grade diatomaceous earth as it is chemically treated. Use only food grade diatomaceous earth around humans, pets, and animals.
6. Caution:
Keep out of children reach. Avoid the eyes as DE will dry them out and be uncomfortable.
